| Founded in 2000 by American climber Garth Willis, The Alpine
Fund seeks to connect Kyrgyzstan’s two greatest resources - its
youth and its mountains.
(how it all began)
The Alpine Fund is currently running only limited programs, which include
indoor rock climbing and one trip to the mountains per month with youth from the
Voenna Antonovka Orphanage. Arianna is the country director, and we have at any one time several Alpine Interns.
We do not have a volunteer program at the moment where we host volunteers, but
if you are in Bishkek and want to help out please contact us, we still need
support even though we are not running as many trips as before.
What we do
- Alpine Interns is an opportunity for young adults who have been
involved in our previous programs to share what they have learned with younger
students. By instructing and leading outings for younger students the Alpine
Interns build up their own skill-sets and set positive examples. Increased
self-confidence and leadership abilities make Alpine Interns more confident
in life and prepare them for the challenges the face.
- The Alpine Learning Center is a cabin near Bishkek that serves as
the staging area and launching point for Alpine Fund outings. Camping
participants often camp outside the cabin, enjoy breakfast from the kitchen
and launch their own hiking ‘expeditions’ from this base camp. The primary
reason for using this cabin is to provide a safe shelter from the weather
and a warm place to gather and sleep at night, but children here are also
able to learn independent living skills such as preparing breakfast,
learning about nature, and maintaining good hygiene.
